Okavango Delta
Why holiday in the Okavango Delta ?
A delta that doesn’t flow into the sea – it’s a natural wonder and UNESCO’s 1,000th World Heritage Site. Each year, floodwaters from the highlands of Angola travel to the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert, fanning out to form the Okavango Delta. The waters usually arrive between May and August, turning the delta into a lush, green oasis and creating a variety of habitats that support a vast array of bird and wildlife.
This paradise of water, palms and sandy islands offers unique experiences that you simply won’t find elsewhere. Exploring the delta by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, allows you to glide silently through the narrow channels, passing close to wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles and wading birds. As the floodwaters spread across the delta, animals migrate to this oasis too, making it one of the most remarkable wildlife viewing locations. You may encounter elephants, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as water-adapted species such as the Red Lechwe and the shy Sitatunga antelope.
Activities vary depending on location and the time of year. Camps with permanent water offer explorations by mokoro and motorboat year-round. Others offer a thrilling combination of game drives in open safari vehicles and boating when the water levels permit. There are opportunities to explore on foot, by bicycle and on horseback too, or to sleep out on one of the delta’s palm-fringed islands. Speak to the African Pride team who will ensure you make the most of the experience.
Most camps are accessible by light aircraft flight from Maun or Kasane, and the bird's-eye view offers a stunning first glimpse of the Delta. For an especially unforgettable experience, we recommend taking a scenic helicopter flight.

When to travel to the Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is an ever changing landscape thanks to the floodwaters which arrive from the Angolan Highlands. Peak season is from July to October when it is dry overhead but the Delta is full of water for maximising activities. January to March brings the wettest weather but also new life with baby animals and phenomenal birdlife.
