Masai Mara
Why safari in the Masai Mara?
Set against the backdrop of the Oloololo Escarpment, the grassy plains, rivers and rolling hills of the Masai Mara play host so some of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. Famed prides of lions - the stars of many TV documentaries - large herds of elephants and a phenomenal variety of wildlife provide exceptional safari experiences year-round.
From July to September, the Great Migration arrives, and hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra take centre stage, thrashing through rivers and spreading out across the plains. Little wonder that a visit to the Masai Mara is on everyone’s wish list.
Sharing the same eco-system, a number of private conservancies surround the National Reserve, where safaris can be enjoyed in relative exclusivity.

Guided Journeys
The Masai Mara is of course featured on the majority of guided small group tours we offer in Kenya. The contrast in scenery and wildlife between the Masai Mara, the lakes area and other safari areas makes for a great tour. For a more private experience, these itineraries can also be done with a private guide, tailoring the route exactly to your requirements.
Flying
The option to fly around Kenya always provides a more convenient way to travel and see Kenya from a different perspective whilst flying over the beautiful landscape. Several companies operate a daily ‘circuit’ of light aircraft transfers between the reserves, making it easy to incorporate the different areas into one itinerary. Speak to the team at African Pride for details of the services available.
Lodge Activities
Each lodge in the Masai Mara or the Conservancies will offer daily game viewing activities, however aside of the main event, many will also offer a variety of activities. Most popular are a morning hot air balloon ride culminating in a champagne breakfast in the bush, or a visit to a Masai village to learn about their tribal way of life. Some lodges offer bush walks, bush dinners or even fly-camping.
When to travel to Kenya for a safari
The dry season months of January to March and July to October are generally the best times to visit Kenya for a safari. The days are cooler but still warm and it is generally dry. The Great Migration typically arrives in the Masai Mara between July and September.
