Why safari in a Masai Mara Conservancy?

Surrounding the Masai Mara National Reserve are a number of privately operated conservancies. Unfenced, they share the same eco-systems as the Masai Mara and the wildlife roams freely over a large section of protected land. Each conservancy is accessible only to guests staying in its camps or lodges, resulting in a more intimate and exclusive experience.

Accommodation in the conservancies ranges from beautifully authentic bush camps to luxurious lodges and tented camps, all offering exceptional service and hospitality. The conservancies also have a strong focus on conservation and work with the local communities that often own the land, to maintain the healthy wildlife populations.

We recommend a minimum stay of three nights to fully immerse yourself in both the camp and the surrounding wildlife. For an even richer experience, consider staying in both a conservancy and the National Reserve to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Highlights of a safari in the Masai Mara’s private conservancies

  • With no fences between the conservancies and the National Reserve, you’ll be seeing the wildlife of the Masai Mara in the same beautiful settings.
  • In private conservancies game drives can venture ‘off road’ for better sightings and go out at night when predators are on the prowl and the nocturnal species appear. Many also offer the option of a guided walk.
  • The conservancies play a huge part in supporting wildlife conservation and community projects, sharing the land with the local communities. They will often proudly take you to their local village or enable you to participate in a conservation project.

When to travel to Kenya for a safari

The dry season months of January to March and July to October are generally the best times to visit Kenya for a safari. The days are cooler but still warm and it is generally dry. The Great Migration typically arrives in the Masai Mara between July and September.
