Why holiday in Mozambique?
Mozambique excites us. Most visit its beautifully unspoilt Indian Ocean beaches and islands found around the Ilha de Mozambique stretching south towards Vilanculos, the Bazaruto Archipelago and Ponta Mamoli. This stretch also supports an impressive array of marine wildlife notably turtles, migrating whales and whale sharks.
Throughout the country it’s Portuguese colonial past is evident, and this is fused with the constant African and Arabian influences creating a more relaxed barefoot luxury approach. The end result is a beach destination that appeals to those looking for something different.
*The FCDO is currently advising against travel to this area. We monitor these advisories closely at all times. If you are interested in visiting Mozambique in the future, please let us know and we will be in touch when travel restrictions are removed.*

Explore Mozambique
Mozambique is a beautiful country. Inland there are national parks and reserves and along the Indian Ocean coastline you’ll find stunning beaches, protected marine parks and a string of dreamy island archipelagos.
Lying just off the southeast coast at the heart of a protected Marine National Park, is a beautiful collection of islands, the Bazaruto Archipelago. Benguerra Island, the second largest island, has shandy shores lined with palm trees and sand dunes. Inland there are forests and freshwater lakes, indigenous flora and fauna and welcoming local communities. The waters are excellent for snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing and are home to one of the last remaining viable populations of the rare dugong. Flying in by helicopter is a breathtaking way to arrive.
On the mainland and within a short drive of Vilanculos you’ll find rustic and romantic beach lodges and boutique hotels. The long beaches of white or gold sand are pristine and often uncrowded, just perfect for relaxing, exploring the tidal pools or taking long walks along the shore.
In the far south of the country, just across the border from South Africa, is Ponta Mamoli, an area known for its wide beaches of soft white sand, crystal clear waters and excellent dive sites. Glamorous resorts perch on the dunes with fabulous sea views. Accessed by 4x4 vehicles across sandy roads, getting here can feel like an adventure in itself, but its very remoteness is a huge part of its appeal.
Experience Mozambique
Beaches & Islands. Grass covered dunes sweep down to some spectacular beaches. Wide and sandy, often unpopulated, they seem tailor-made for relaxation. Low tides reveal sandbars that are perfect spots for a romantic picnic. Exquisite islands deliver a true castaway experience, barefoot luxury, no shoes required.
Ocean safari. Bazaruto’s protected marine waters are ideal for diving and snorkelling. From July to November humpback whales pass through on their annual migration, always a thrilling sight. At Ponta Mamoli you may have the opportunity to swim with the wild Bottlenose dolphins in the bay, a magical experience. Divers can enjoy some world class diving, be that at one of the world’s top pinnacle reefs or with whale sharks. Between November and February, Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles’ nest on the unspoiled shores.
Activities. Popular watersports include fishing, paddle boarding and kite surfing while on land try horse-riding or hiking in the dunes. Beach picnics and sunset dhow cruises add a touch of romance.
How to choose where to stay in Mozambique
Whether you choose an island hideaway or a lodge on the mainland, you’ll enjoy warm African hospitality and a relaxed beach vibe. The toes-in-the-sand beach retreats may lack some of the sophistication of the larger resorts in Mauritius but that is precisely why we love them. You’ll still feel like you’re in Africa, with all its warmth and friendliness.
Travel Mozambique Your Way
A stay in Mozambique at the end of a safari provides an alternative and intriguing beach stay to any African holiday. We are here at African Pride to help plan and advise how to do this in a way that meets your wishes as effortlessly as possible.
Flying in Mozambique
Whilst Mozambique has no direct flights from the UK, there are a number of regional flight connections from South Africa and East Africa, some of which easily link the major safari areas to the coast. Access to the islands is then by a short hop on small aircraft or helicopter transfers.
Rail
Rail travel around Mozambique for the international visitor is limited, however the iconic Rovos Rail operates a few rail journeys that incorporate the southern area between South Africa and Maputo as it travels between Pretoria and Victoria Falls. Contact the team to find out further details.
Cruise
Cruise companies often call in at the historical capital of Maputo as they travel around the African continent. Voyages are planned well in advance and working with the cruise companies we can incorporate a cruise into a pre or post Africa itinerary to help plan the trip of a lifetime.
Multi-Country Combinations
If the holiday of lifetime would be to combine Cape Town with the mighty Victoria Falls, a safari in the Kruger National Park and ending with a stay on an idyllic beach in Mozambique, then no problem, the African Pride team relish and excel at making such dreams come true.
Mozambique’s Accommodation
The choice is yours! Beach hotels range from beautiful lodges located on the most remote and idyllic islands and beaches to boutique hotels and villa-style properties by the sea. Discuss with us your preferred accommodation style and we can suggest properties to suit.
When to travel to Mozambique
Mozambique is best visited for a beach break between April and November, with warm sunny days and very little rainfall from June to October in particular. Diving and snorkelling is generally best April to June and September to November when water clarity is at its best.
Most rainfall occurs from December to March when it is hot and humid meaning it is not perfect beach weather, however this is the time to witness turtles nesting on the coast.
