Damaraland & Kaokoland
Why explore Damaraland & Kaokoland?
Damaraland, an area that spans both the Erongo and Kunene regions, is without doubt one of the most scenic areas in Namibia: huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful with unique wildlife encounters, spectacular landscapes and sites of historical and cultural significance.
Granite mountains and red sandstone formations take on beautiful orange/red hues at sunrise and sunset, contrasting vividly against the blue sky. Seemingly inhospitable sandy plains and dry riverbeds sustain a small but wide-ranging population of desert-adapted animals, including elephants, rhino and giraffe who have evolved to survive in the semi-arid environment. Tracking rhino on foot is an exhilarating experience.
At Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are over 2,500 ancient rock carvings thought to be up to 6,000 years old. The scenery is captivating too, from the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, to natural wonders with intriguing names such as the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain.
To the far northwest of the country between Damaraland and the border with Angola, is Kaokoland, a sparsely populated area of true wilderness, with mountains, valleys, rivers and waterfalls. It is also home to the Himba people, an ancient and semi-nomadic tribe.
Visiting these remote and spectacular desert landscapes is a highlight for many. Whether you choose to fly, drive or explore on a guided tour, our team will work with you to create an itinerary that matches your requirements.
