Why explore the Skeleton Coast?

Evocative, mysterious, remote and hauntingly beautiful: the Skeleton Coast is where the hot desert meets the cold Atlantic, a remote, desolate and utterly fascinating area. Bleached whalebones and rusted shipwrecks line the shores, and along with the white dunes and wind-swept coast create an almost surreal, otherworldly landscape. 

Early mornings are often shrouded in a thick coastal fog, a vital source of moisture in the dry environment. On clear nights the Milky Way lights up the sky, a stargazer’s dream. Despite the barren landscapes, wildlife has adapted to the conditions, from desert-adapted elephants to lions, hyena and giraffe. At the Cape Cross Seal Reserve you’ll find one of the largest breeding colonies of Cape fur seals in the world – an attractive proposition for predators such as jackals and brown hyenas.
