Why explore Sossusvlei & the Namib-Naukluft Park?

Stretching from central Namibia to the Namib Desert basin, the Namib-Naukluft Park is one of the largest conservation areas in the world. And it’s here that you’ll find some of the world’s highest sand dunes. Huge drifts of sand rise up to 350 metres, their red and orange colours contrasting with the white salt pans at their feet and the bright blue skies above.

At Sossusvlei, one of the area’s highlights, the endless sea of towering dunes meets the bleached white Deadvlei pan, its parched surface punctuated by ancient trees – it’s an awe-inspiring sight. Climbing the dunes is not for the faint-hearted, but the views from the top are breathtaking. At the gateway to the park is the Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge formed 2 million years ago, is easily explored on foot along a short hiking trail.

Just south of Sesriem on the park’s western border is the NamibRand Nature Reserve, Africa’s first Wilderness Quiet Park and a designated Dark Sky Reserve – as you would expect, the star-gazing is exceptional.

Activities in the area include nature drives and walks, cycling and desert explorations. Accommodation ranges from eco-camps to luxury lodges, many featuring star beds to make the most of those incredibly clear night skies. Those with an appetite for adventure can self-drive from Windhoek, or we offer guided tours is preferred, however nothing quite beats flying in, the views over the endless sea of sand are unforgettable.

When to travel to Sossusvlei & the Namib-Naukluft Park

Sossusvlei & the Namib-Naukluft Park are year round destinations. A more pleasant time to visit is during the cooler months between May to September, when it can be cold in the morning, with warm temperatures during the day. From October to April it can very hot, which may limit the amount of time you wish to spend outside exploring the unique sights of the desert landscape.
