Why holiday in Windhoek & Surrounds?

Namibia’s capital city is a melting pot of cultures. Surrounded on three sides by hills and mountains, the city is a fascinating blend of old and new, where you’ll see smartly clad executives alongside Herero women dressed in beautiful tribal clothing, and modern architecture sitting alongside heritage buildings from the colonial era. The cuisine is a fusion of Namibian and European flavours too, with locally brewed beers a speciality. The National Museum is worth a visit and handmade arts and crafts from the Namibia Craft Centre and local markets make excellent souvenirs.

Most holidays to Namibia will start and end in Windhoek and there are charming guesthouses and boutique hotels in the city itself. Alternatively, within a 30-45 minute drive of Windhoek’s international airport there are a number of nature reserves where you can enjoy local wildlife and wellness experiences in spectacular settings, a great way to start or end your Namibian adventure.

North of Windhoek, on the road to Etosha, the town of Okahandja has craft markets brimming with Kavango wood carvings made by local artisan crafters. Halfway between Windhoek and Etosha is the Okonjima Nature Reserve, home of the AfriCat foundation. It’s worth spending a night or two here, to see Africa’s cats and other endangered species on game drives and support the vital conservation work.
