Why holiday in Rwanda?
Rwanda will leave you feeling inspired. Despite its traumatic past, a now united nation proudly wants to share not only the story of its recovery, but also its beautiful country, the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’.
Trekking the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes Mountains is naturally a must, yet beyond this are safaris in Akagera; playful chimpanzees in the forests of Nyungwe and stunning views across Lake Kivu. Whilst in Kigali visit the poignant Genocide Museum, then contrast this with an uplifting visit to one of the many projects created to help those affected: both will move you in very different ways.
Discover Rwanda
Explore Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park, in the northwest of the country, has a dramatic setting – part of the Virunga Mountains, there are five volcanoes, forested slopes often shrouded in mist and a healthy population of Mountain Gorillas. It’s also where primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her pioneering research.
West of Kigali, Akagera National Park is a conservation success story. The diverse habitat hosts an amazing variety of birdlife, plants and wildlife, including Africa’s Big 5 - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros.
Chimpanzees and colobus monkeys swing through the trees in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Explore one of Africa’s oldest rainforests on a primate trek, a forest hike or a canopy walk above the forest floor. The neighbouring tea plantations can provide some refreshment.
Linking Nyungwe and Volcanoes parks is Lake Kivu, whose picturesque shores are lined with the greenest of terraced hillsides and eucalyptus or pine woods. A journey here will reveal friendly villages and small towns with small resort style hotels with their own sandy beaches.
Most visits to Rwanda will include a night or two in the country’s capital city, Kigali. It’s a fascinating place, vibrant and full of life. It’s worth taking time to reflect at the Genocide Museum as well as sampling the local cuisine and exploring the arts and crafts scene.
Experience Rwanda
Safari. From game drives and boat safaris to trekking through lush rainforest, Rwanda’s safari options are many and varied. Due to the country’s compact size you can enjoy a variety of experiences in one trip, just ask our consultants to plan your ideal itinerary.
Beautiful Scenery. Rwanda is a hilly country, undeniably beautiful with breathtaking views around every corner. Steep slopes are covered with tea and banana plantations, the volcanoes and lakes of the Virunga Mountains are simply stunning and the forests a delight to explore.
Unique wildlife. A precious hour spent with the Mountain Gorillas will leave memories that will last a lifetime. Tracking chimpanzees is a memorable experience, and you may see troops of colobus monkeys along the way.
Culture & community. In Kigali, take time to explore Rwanda’s artistic side, from local craft markets to the Arts Centre, a hub of contemporary Rwandan art. The colourful Intore Dancers put on a lively show and a visit to a cultural village will provide insights into local culture and ways of life.
Travel Rwanda Your Way
Rwanda is a relatively small country and so all the main sights are easily accessible from the capital Kigali. We’re here at African Pride to help plan and advise how to do this in a way that meets your wishes as effortlessly as possible.
Guided Tours
In such a remote part of Africa, small group tours operate in the form of superior quality, soft adventure ‘overland tours’ that incorporate a few East African countries. There are also some small group tours that travel through the country staying at lodges as they go.
Private Guided Trip
If you prefer to travel independently, then a private guided trip is the perfect way to go. Your own driver/guide can be arranged to travel with you, camp to camp, sharing the entire journey through Rwanda. Ideal for a couple but also a family or group of friends, creating a truly memorable experience.
Flying
Rwanda is well serviced by many of the world’s leading carriers and there are onward connections to link with a variety of other African destinations. Due to the country’s hilly terrain there are limited domestic flying options though helicopters are often used for speedy access to the main areas of interest.
Multi-Country Combinations
If the holiday of lifetime would be to combine the mighty Victoria Falls, gorilla trekking in Rwanda, or seeing the Great Migration crossing the Serengeti before ending on an idyllic beach in the Seychelles, then no problem, the African Pride team relish and excel at making such dreams come true.
Accommodation
The choice is yours! Options range from beautiful lodges in the most remote and beautiful of settings to authentic simple tented safari camps. Discuss with us the accommodation styles preferred and we can suggest properties to suit from the wide selection of hotels, camps and lodges we know, first hand.
When to travel to Rwanda
Rwanda often experiences 4 seasons in one day, with a tropical but temperate climate meaning temperatures are fairly stable year round. The nature of the rainforests means you are likely to experience some rain at any time, however the peak dry season months from June to September are optimal for trekking primates and brings the best weather to the Lake Kivu region for a relaxing lakeside retreat.
December to February brings another drier spell across the country with fewer visitors, and whilst parks remain open during the long rains of March to mid-May and then the short rains in October and November, hiking and trekking becomes more challenging on the forest trails.
