Why safari in Akagera National Park?

Akagera National Park sits on Rwanda’s northeastern border. Surrounded by hills, the park is scenically beautiful with wide plains, forests, swamps and lakes. This diverse ecosystem forms the largest protected wetland in Central Africa and it is a conservation success story. Home to Africa’s Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), the park also boasts an incredible variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras and primates such as vervet monkeys and olive baboons. Safaris here include game drives by day and by night, nature walks and boat cruises on Lake Ihema, where you may also spot hippos and crocodiles along the lake’s shore. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise too with over 500 species of birds recorded, including the rare and endangered Shoebill stork.

When to travel to Akagera National Park

The dry season months from June to September and also mid December to mid February offer prime wildlife viewing, with less vegetation and animals congregating around the lakes. Most rainfall occurs in March and April which makes game viewing harder although the rains bring new green scenery and excellent birding.
