Why holiday in Lake Kivu?

Nestled between the Virunga Mountains and Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu stands out as an oasis of blue amongst Rwanda’s lush green woodlands.

Dotted with islands, it’s a picturesque sight and a peaceful retreat, the shores lined with palms trees, sandy beaches and charming little towns – from quieter Rusizi at its southern end, close enough to Nyungwe to combine forest and lake experiences, to livelier Rubavu further north, a popular resort and ideal spot to unwind after a trek to the mountain gorillas.

Take a boat trip on the lake and visit one of its many islands, swim in the warm, clear waters or participate in more active pursuits such as kayaking, paddle boarding or a scenic hike along one of the lakeside trails.

When to travel to Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu experiences two wet seasons - the long rains from March to May and the short rains in October and November. To relax on the beaches and enjoy the activities on the lake then the dry season from June to September is best, followed by the period from mid December to mid February.
