Why holiday in Nyungwe National Park?

In the southwestern corner of Rwanda is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. Giant ferns, rare orchids and ancient trees line the forested slopes of Nyungwe National Park, but it’s the 13 species of primate that most people come here for, and in particular, the chimpanzees

Trekking through the forest in search of the chimps is an exciting adventure, often strenuous too, but spending an hour watching these playful primates is a memorable experience. Along the way, you may also encounter monkeys and many of Nyungwe’s butterflies and birds

Hiking trails lead to waterfalls or through the lush bamboo forest while a thrilling canopy walkway, suspended 50 metres above the forest floor, gives a bird’s eye perspective on the surrounding flora and fauna. The hills around the forest are covered with the verdant green of tea plantations where you can savour the local brew with the most incredible mountain backdrops.

When to travel to Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park is open year round, but the dry season months from June to September when trails are less slippery makes for the easiest trekking time to see the primates. It can rain at any time however. Birding is best over the wet season but hiking does become difficult in March and April as the rains peak.
