Overview

Surrounded by lush vegetation with the mist-shrouded Virunga volcanoes as a backdrop, Sabyinyo’s dramatic setting really captures the essence of the area. Owned and operated by the local community, the lodge is a comfortable and welcoming base from which to uncover the wonders of Volcanoes National Park.  

Rooms

The lodge’s nine rooms and suites are in whitewashed stone cottages with traditional Rwandese tiled roofs, set amongst the grounds. Each has a spacious sitting area, a fireplace, an en-suite bathroom and an outdoor veranda, a beautiful spot to relax, take in the views and enjoy the bird-filled gardens.

A Family Cottage has two separate bedrooms and is ideal for families with older children while the two suites feature king-sized four-poster beds and are popular with couples and honeymooners.

Facilities

Meals are taken at the main lodge, a short walk through the gardens from the cottages. Here, there’s a lounge with a welcoming fireplace and a dining room where meals, using fresh produce from the organic vegetable garden, are served with traditional Rwandan warmth.

There are plenty of activities available from the lodge. Trekking to see the mountain gorillas and the golden monkeys is the main drawcard, but there are also opportunities to hike up Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke for stunning views. Visits can be arranged to Dian Fossey’s burial site and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Guided walks will introduce you to the area’s incredible birds as well as the local community and culture.
