Eastern Cape Safari
Why go on safari in the Eastern Cape?
Just a short drive from the end of the Garden Route, the Game Reserves of the Eastern Cape offer some of the most accessible big game viewing in South Africa. Being malaria free, this area is a great choice for families, and within our chosen reserves we know the perfect spots for romantic escapes too.
We always recommend a minimum of two nights – preferably three – to make the most of your time on safari.
A number of well-run wildlife reserves are within easy reach of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), and with accommodation ranging from bush chalets and safari homes to elegant manors and glamourous tented suites, all tastes and budgets are catered for.

Eastern Cape Safari Highlights
- The private reserves offer the chance to see wildlife in pristine and authentic environments. The landscape is generally greener and more open that you’ll find in other areas, such as the Kruger, with gently rolling hills and a mix of habitats, including bushveld, savanna, coastal forests and grassy plains.
- While the reserves are, in theory, home to the Big 5, it’s fair to say that leopards are very rarely seen here, however the twice-daily game drives will serve up plenty of thrilling interactions with lion, rhino, elephants and much more besides.
- Some reserves offer boat safaris on rivers (when water levels are high enough) and at Kariega you can even enjoy a day on the beach.
- Addo Elephant National Park, the third largest reserve in South Africa, is famed for its large herds of elephants, as well as black rhinos, a large number of Cape buffalo and even a colony of meerkats – we will be happy to advise on where to stay if you want to see these captivating creatures.
- In addition to game drives, if you have an interest in conservation, fishing, canoeing, exploring on foot, relaxing in a spa or visiting the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries, please let us know and we will plan your holiday accordingly.
- If you’re looking for a ‘bush and beach’ combination, the Eastern Cape has some beautiful, unspoiled beaches and charming coastal towns just a short drive from the wildlife reserves, ask our team for their recommendations.

When To Travel on an Eastern Cape Safari
Wildlife viewing is not affected by the weather, seasons or time of year. Animals are active 365 days a year. If there is something you are specifically looking to see, consult with one of our tours consultants upon making your booking.
It’s recommended that you bring warmer clothing on safari, particularly during the winter months as it may be cold, especially on early morning and evening game drives.
