Greater Kruger Area
Why visit the Greater Kruger Area?
The Greater Kruger is one of the very best places in Africa for a safari and one that we just can’t help ourselves wanting to visit again and again. It is not just the intoxicating mix of diverse and abundant wildlife, there is also breathtaking scenery and pristine wilderness. All who visit are simply captivated. Little wonder that it features high on so many wish lists.
The Kruger National Park is the main drawcard. The park and the private reserves that surround it are renowned for exceptional Big 5 game viewing – and probably the best chance of seeing leopards in South Africa. The accommodation choices are exceptional too, from luxury lodges and stylish tented camps to sleeping under canvas and eating around the campfire, all tastes and budgets are catered for. Whichever you choose, the experience will be magical.
Away from the wildlife, the Mpumalanga region has some of the most beautiful scenery in South Africa. The Panorama Route is one of our favourites, with numerous outstanding viewpoints dotted amongst the mountains, forests and canyons that you will often have almost to yourself.
Whether it is your first visit or your tenth, there will always be something new and different to experience in and around the Greater Kruger.

How to Travel the Greater Kruger Area
Self Drive
A self-drive trip around the Kruger National Park is a great way for the more experienced African traveller to really immerse themselves in one of the most well-known parks in Africa. The Park has an impressive network of roads, with several simple accommodation options. Travelling at your own pace and stopping to view animals as you please is simply a delight. Beyond the park, Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route lives up to its name with many scenic spots along the way. Our team will help you plan your route, book accommodation, and we supply driving directions to help you on your way.
Day Tours
Whilst staying in one of the private game reserves in the Kruger area all game drives are included in your stay. However, for those staying outside these reserves, a day safari into the park will provide a wonderful opportunity to experience a safari. The tours can be done either by open or closed vehicles, can be full day or depart in the morning or afternoon, just whichever suits. We also offer tours along the Panorama Route, a cruise on the Blyde Dam or even a day trip into eSwatini (Swaziland). For those staying in the Kruger itself then the National Park also offers a selection of game drives.
Guided Journeys
Many small group tours travel through the area and include some game drives into the Kruger before they move onto eSwatini (Swaziland), through KwaZulu-Natal before ending in Durban, and these tours often form a part of a ‘Grand Tour’ of the country. A private guided tour ensures you spend all the time on safari you want, viewing the animals as you please. Immerse yourself into the adventure of a guided camping trip complete with a support crew or take a guided walking safari offering a truly different safari.
Rail Travel
A number of Rovos Rail’s longer journeys travel through the area and include game drives into the Kruger. These journeys are varied and offer either a comprehensive tour of South Africa, form part of a journey through to Victoria Falls or across to Namibia. There is also the option of a specialist golf rail journey. These journeys are popular and it is recommended to contact us well in advance to make reservations for you.
Flying
There are a number of airports that service the game reserves along the Kruger’s western border, and these have flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and further afield to Victoria Falls or to Mozambique. For a more direct route there are flight transfers by smaller plane which fly directly from Johannesburg into an airstrip where you will be met and transferred to your lodge. The African Pride team can advise on the best routes with the best fares, to ensure an effortless journey to combine all the areas you want to include in your holiday.
When to travel to The Greater Kruger Area
The Greater Kruger is great to visit at any time of year, but the cooler and drier months from April to November are best for viewing wildlife - the grass is shorter, the vegetation less dense and the animals easier to spot.
