KwaZulu-Natal
Why visit KwaZulu-Natal?
Affectionately known as ‘KZN’ this province is famous for its beautiful scenery, historic battlefields, game reserves, National Parks, dramatic mountains and Indian Ocean beaches. It’s also the homeland of the Zulu who proudly display their colourful culture and traditions. One of our favourite regions, there is so much to do and see in KZN that we often refer to it as ‘South Africa in a nutshell’.
The gateway city of Durban extends north to the popular coastal resorts of uMhlanga and Ballito with their cafes, restaurants, beaches and promenade walks where you may spot pods of dolphins playing in the surf below.
Travelling inland, the ‘Midlands Meander’ is a series of marked routes leading to local artists, craft shops, wineries, breweries, boutiques and restaurants. Beyond the Midlands, the peaks of the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains punctuate the skyline.
If the idea of visiting a battlefield isn’t high on your list, then we encourage you to think again. At Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, immortalised in the epic film Zulu, some of the best story-tellers you will ever find, often descendants of the Zulus involved on the day, retell the stories of these battles in the very places they took place. A powerful and moving experience.
As for safari, KwaZulu-Natal delivers on this front too, with some of the best wildlife experiences in the country, including Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, the oldest reserve in South Africa and iSimangaliso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beautiful coastal reserves are tucked away along the Elephant Coast while inland the private game reserves offer a variety of spectacular safari opportunities in extraordinarily beautiful settings.

How to travel KwaZulu-Natal
Self-Drive Touring
A self-drive trip around KZN will take you into remote areas, along dirt roads and whilst the drives can be long, in return there is spectacular scenery, an intriguing insight into the Zulu nation and other memorable discoveries along the way. Most popular are the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains, the arts and craft route of the Midlands Meander; or take in areas like historic battlefields, some of the oldest game reserves in Africa or remote and deserted beaches. Our team will help you plan your route, book accommodation, and we supply driving directions to help you on your way.
Day Tours
A range of day tours are on offer from Durban to highlight the main attractions of the area, the most popular include day safaris to the parks in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi area, guided hiking tours to the imposing Drakensberg Mountains, Zulu cultural tours or Durban City tours. For something a little different take a tour of the Durban markets, tour the rock art sites or a canopy tour in the Drakensberg. Or for those seeking a thrill, join a 4x4 excursion up the Sani Pass into Lesotho, the stunning views will distract from the hair-raising gradients which range between 20-40%.
Guided Journeys
Self-driving around KZN is not for everyone and so a guided tour is an alternative way to explore the fascinating sights. Scheduled tours through the area often start in Johannesburg, take in the Kruger and Eswatini (Swaziland) before travelling through the eastern side of the province to Durban. To really delve deeper into the main highlights we recommend a private tour. Your private driver guide will share his passion and knowledge to enhance the experience and give a greater understanding of this unique area of South Africa.
Rail
Rovos Rail operate a number of journeys through the KwaZulu-Natal province. Most regular are the two-night/three-day trips between Pretoria and Durban which include safaris, battlefields, Zulu culture and some of the most beautiful scenery. Some of Rovos’s longer journeys also travel through the region to encompass some of the more northerly areas, whilst their Golf safari is a great way to experience KZN’s outstanding golf courses.
Cruise
Durban’s bustling port features on a number of cruise itineraries as a departure point to many an exotic Indian Ocean cruise. The port is also a popular stop off point for a wide range of cruise companies operating voyages around the southern tip of Africa. Voyages are planned well in advance and working with the cruise companies we can incorporate a cruise into a pre or post Africa itinerary to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.
Flying
KZN’s main airport is Durban which has a number of international carriers offering connections through to the UK. Domestic flights run to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and the Kruger. Near to the game reserves Richards Bay is a good access point with flights to and from Johannesburg. The African Pride team can advise on the best routes to ensure an effortless journey and to combine all the areas you want to include in your holiday.
When to travel to KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal is a year-round destination to visit, but as it covers such a vast area, the climate varies. We would recommend the best time to visit from April - September.
