Overview

Set in a 5000-acre Natural Heritage site close to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, Fugitives' Drift combines scenery, wildlife and some unforgettable history in the nearby battlefields. Owned by the Rattray family, the lodge is steeped in local heritage.

Rooms

The Lodge has 10 spacious rooms set into the hillside. Each is beautifully decorated, with inside and outside showers, air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi and full length sliding glass doors that lead to private verandas - the ideal spot to relax and soak up the views across the plains that flank the Buffalo River gorge.

Also on the reserve is a Guest House with six spacious rooms and a pool set in its own garden.

Facilities

The lodge has a swimming pool with a fantastic view and a large dining room with outdoor deck. Guests are welcome to browse or simply relax with a good book in the Harford Library and to visit the Museum which contains items ranging from the Stone Age to relics from the battlefields.

Activities include daily tours of the nearby battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift with expert guides who bring the Anglo Zulu battles of 1879 vividly to life.

Take time to explore the reserve on foot, it is home to indigenous flora and fauna including zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and prolific birdlife. Maps are available from reception, or a guided walk can be arranged. 

The battlefield tours and the guided walk on the reserve are available at local charges and advance booking is highly recommended.
