Overview

Three Tree Hill is a family-run lodge where hosts Simon and Cheryl welcome guests as part of the family. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, with plenty of opportunity to chat with fellow guests or to sit on your balcony with a pair of binoculars and see what you can spot in the neighbouring Spioenkop Game Reserve. With the Anglo-Boer War battlefields and the Drakensberg Mountains within easy reach, there’s plenty to explore in the area, as well as at the lodge itself.

Rooms

Six standalone cottages are built in traditional 1920’s style with corrugated iron exteriors and wood-panelled interiors. Each sleeps two and comes with an en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan, tea and coffee facilities and a private veranda overlooking the reserve. Rooms are accessed by a fairly steep pathway from the main lodge.

Three larger, two-bedroom cottages are ideal for families – Churchills and Burchells Cottages have private pools.

Facilities

The main lodge has a huge wrap-around veranda for al fresco dining and inside, a comfortable lounge and dining area linked by a central fireplace. Dinner is a three-course set menu. Private dining can be arranged in the underground wine cellar, by request. There’s an outside play area for children and a sheltered pool.

Take a nature walk around the farm – there are marked routes ranging from two to nine kilometres. Activities available (at local charges) include guided game walks in the wildlife reserve, mountain bike and horse riding in addition to the excellent guided tours of the battles of Spioenkop and Colenso (advance booking advised).
