Why visit the Drakensberg Mountains?

The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, or Drakensberg Mountains, is a simply breath-taking region that captivates us every time we visit. Revered in local culture as the Barrier of Spears, this awe-inspiring World Heritage Site is home to guided walks, striking scenery and a feeling of space where Zulu villages with their rondavels conjure a sense of times past.

There are numerous ancient rock art sites to be explored, canopy tours or white-water rafting trips to undertake, or even take the spectacular Sani Pass to the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Our experts will help you plan a trip crammed full of towering mountain peaks, winding rivers, lush green valleys and panoramic views.

Highlights of the Drakensberg Mountains

  • The peaks of the Drakensberg are spectacular, their dramatic shapes piercing the skyline. Around Cathedral Peak there are many mountain walks and hiking trails while at 3,377 metres, Champagne Castle is one of the highest peaks in the range.
  • Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world, drops a staggering 948 metres. While you can hike to the top for a unique perspective, you can also view the falls from below.
  • The world famous ‘Amphitheatre’ in the Royal Natal National Park was the setting for the film ‘Zulu. The curved cliff face stretches for about five kilometres and is one of the most recognizable sights of the Drakensberg.
  • Adventure seekers can enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, abseiling, rock climbing and zip-wiring over a canopy of trees.
  • A performance by the Drakensberg Boys Choir is a real treat. The choir perform regularly throughout the year, ask our team if you are keen to attend a concert.
  • If you have a head for heights, the drive up the Sani Pass into the beautiful mountain kingdom of Lesotho is spectacular but also very steep so we recommend a guided tour.
