Midlands
Why visit the KZN Midlands?
The green pastures, streams, forests and winding rivers of the Natal Midlands lead all the way from Durban to the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. The area is an artisan’s paradise, where talented locals have come together to create wonderful trails full of art galleries, restaurants and activities that criss-cross this hospitable heart of KZN. There’s plenty to see, whether you are just passing through or have a few days to enjoy the area’s history, scenery and natural beauty.

Highlights of the KZN Midlands
- The Midlands Meander is a series of five marked, self-drive routes, designed to showcase local arts and crafts, artisan producers of food, craft beers, wines and gins and outdoor adventures. The routes are a great way to discover some of the area’s hidden gems.
- The Nelson Mandela Capture Site near Howick is both poignant and awe-inspiring. The well-presented exhibition is thought-provoking and the world-renowned interactive sculpture commemorating the spot where ‘Madiba’ was arrested in 1962 is fascinating, clever and iconic.
- At Mooi River you can visit the area where a young Winston Churchill was captured in 1899 when the armoured train he was travelling in was derailed.
- The Howick Falls, just outside the town of Howick, is an impressive 95-metre waterfall. Steeped in Zulu legend, the dramatic 95 metre drop can be viewed from various points.
- Nottingham Road is a quaint town with pubs, breweries and old churches. Visit the Nottingham Road Brewery for a taste of the locally crafted beer.
