Why safari in the Northern Reserves?

To the north of Johannesburg are a number of wildlife reserves, each offering its own unique safari experiences. Easily reached by road (or a short flight), they are all are malaria-free, making them particularly attractive for families. We have travelled extensively around the area and can provide the best advice and tips on where to go and for how long.

On the border of Botswana lies Madikwe, the 4th largest reserve in the country, home to the Big 5 along with wild dog and cheetah. It’s also scenically beautiful with a varied choice of camps and lodges. Being malaria-free, families love this reserve and there are some great family-friendly lodges.

Further east, and framed by the Waterberg mountains, the private reserves of the Waterberg combine wildlife viewing with scenic locations. From romantic boltholes perched high on cliffs to family-friendly lodges there is something for everyone. Some lodges offer additional activities such as horse-riding, fishing and bush walks too which we feel makes an excellent complement to a safari in the Kruger.

In the far north-west of South Africa, on the southernmost edge of the Kalahari is a truly unique and exceptional reserve – Tswalu Kalahari Reserve. Here, nestled between the Korannaberg Mountains and the Kalahari’s red sands and dunes, there are three exclusive safari camps, a restaurant that will take you on a culinary adventure and, if you are lucky, the opportunity to see some of South Africa’s more unusual wildlife.

"African Pride throughout have been professional and patient with the group's changing needs. I couldn’t recommend African Pride highly enough. It was a holiday that we all now hold as one of the best we have ever had!! Thank you."

"We felt thoroughly spoiled and privileged to have had such a wonderful family holiday - we really enjoyed the whole experience. The boys loved the hike up Table Mountain, and cable car back down. We definitely benefited from a good exchange rate, so eating out as a family wasn’t a painful experience! The only thing I would have done differently is pack a few warmer layers for safari – always forget how cold Africa can be in the bush!"

How to travel the Northern Reserves

Montagu Tunnel self drive SS

By Road

The majority of travellers will take private transfers to and from Madikwe or the Waterberg reserves. Sit back and watch the scenery pass by whilst you travel to your safari lodge. There is no doubt that self-driving here will give you far greater flexibility to combine these reserves. It must be noted that it is mostly suited to the more experienced African traveller, who is used to driving long distances on dirt roads and into some of South Africa’s more remote areas. Our team will help you plan your route, book accommodation, and we supply driving directions to help you on your way.

By Air

Madikwe and Marakele (in the Waterberg) are well serviced by flight transfers not only to and from Johannesburg but also by a shuttle between the two reserves. Using smaller planes you fly directly into an airstrip where you will be met and transferred to your lodge. Flying back to Johannesburg you can also connect through to the Kruger, combining two wonderful reserves for a memorable two centre safari. The African Pride team can advise on the best routes with the best fares, to ensure an effortless journey to combine all the areas you want to include in your holiday.

Tswalu Kalahari

The remoteness of this reserve is its beauty and consequently access is only by light aircraft transfers directly into the reserve from where you will be transferred to your lodge. These flights operate from either Johannesburg or Cape Town making it easy to combine Tswalu with any itinerary taking in the highlights of the country.

When to travel to the Northern Reserves

May to September is the best time to visit Madikwe and the Waterberg as it is cooler, drier and there is less vegetation, making it easier to spot wildlife.
