Why safari in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve?

Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa's largest privately protected wilderness reserve. Located on the southernmost edge of the Kalahari, rolling dunes of red sand and expansive plains stretch for miles, punctuated by the Korannaberg Mountains. With just three luxury lodges, meerkats and a unique mix of wildlife, the experience is remote and utterly exclusive.

 Tswalu Kalahari's Highlights

  • The setting is simply beautiful, with views that extend for miles across the savanna.
  • Tswalu’s unique eco-system means that you may encounter wildlife not commonly seen elsewhere: the Kalahari black-maned lion; rare and endangered species such as brown hyena and the desert black rhino; shy and elusive nocturnal species, such as pangolin, aardvark, aardwolf and the bat-eared fox.
  • Spend a morning observing Tswalu’s habituated meerkat colonies as they emerge from their burrows and greet the day. These captivating creatures will provide memories to last a lifetime.
  • Buffalo, cheetah and various antelope species live here too, but there are no elephants – the area is too vast and the desert water supply to scarse to support them.
  • The reserve is vast and with only a small number of vehicles out and about, wildlife sightings are hard earned. Having your own private vehicle and experienced guide ensures that you have the freedom and flexibility to follow your own interests and get the most out of your time here.
  • Riding amongst the wildlife on horseback is an unforgettable adventure – Tswalu has a number of horses and no prior riding experience is required.
  • There are several rock art sites on the reserve, offering insights into the culture and traditions of the ancient San people.
  • Experience the unique desert environment on a more intimate and immersive level on a guided walk or spend an unforgettable night sleeping al fresco under the desert skies – on a clear night the star gazing is exceptional.
