Why visit the Waterberg Reserves?
In the Limpopo province, to the north to Johannesburg, lies the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. A malaria-free area of unspoilt wilderness and natural beauty where the majestic Waterberg Mountains tower over sandstone cliffs, savannas, bushveld and riverine forest.
When it comes to the wildlife, there is plenty to see but here the focus is on a more relaxed safari - it’s not all about ticking off the Big 5, it’s more about taking time to appreciate the landscapes and enjoy a variety of activities not found in other reserves.
The Waterberg reserves are popular with families or those looking for a quick safari ‘fix’ from Johannesburg. They also work beautifully alongside a safari in the Kruger or Madikwe.

Highlights of the Waterberg
- The Waterberg Reserves are known for their variety of wildlife with over 200 recorded mammal species and 300 bird species, with the possibility of spotting rarer species including sable and roan antelope, brown hyena and aardwolf.
- Many reserves offer an exciting array of activities in addition to game drives. Horse riding, walking, sleep-outs in the bush, mountain biking, swimming, fishing or cruising along a river can all be arranged, alongside conservation and community projects.
- The region is exceptionally rich in culture with a captivating history that spans over 2,000 years. The hills are dotted with sites of ancient rock paintings that illustrate the lives of the San Bushmen, the earliest inhabitants of the area.

When to travel to the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve
The Waterberg is great to visit at any time of year, but the cooler and drier months from April to November are best for viewing wildlife - the grass is shorter, the vegetation less dense and the animals easier to spot.
