Discover Hermanus & the Overberg
Hermanus & the Overberg's Highlights
- Southern Right whales visit these warmer waters to calve between July and November and it is often possible to spot them from the town of Hermanus or when taking a scenic walk along the scenic cliff path which stretches for 12 kilometres along the coast around Hermanus.
- A boat trip led by an experienced marine biologist is a popular way to have a closer encounter with the area’s rich marine life, where you may be fortunate enough to spot the Marine Big 5 – whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins.
- The seaside town of Hermanus is a popular base for whale watching during South Africa’s winter months and is host to the annual Hermanus Whale Festival in September. In summer, the restaurants and cafes are lively lunch spots, especially at weekends.
- Discover the Cape Floral Kingdom and its unique biodiversity on foot, on a 4x4 safari or even on horseback at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve or explore the coastal caves at Walker Bay.
- The magnificent sandy dunes at De Hoop Nature Reserve are great for sandboarding and for whale-spotting (in season). Take coastal walks with marine guides, nature drives around the reserve, cycle among Cape Mountain zebra, bontebok and eland or enjoy the simple pleasure of a picnic on an unspoiled beach.
- Enjoy food and wine pairings and taste the cool-climate wines produced at the wine estates of the Hemel-en-Aarde and Elgin valleys. The Elgin valley’s orchards also produce fine ciders.
- Between Cape Town and Hermanus, the coastal village of Betty’s Bay is home to a breeding colony of endangered African penguins.
- Keen birders will enjoy a cruise along the Klein River from Stanford, more than 120 species of birds have been recorded in the Klein River Lagoon.
- At the base of the Langeberg Mountain, the historic town of Swellendam connects the Overberg with the Garden Route. A former trading post and the third oldest town in South Africa, many of the town’s buildings showcase beautifully preserved Cape Dutch architecture. From here take a drive through spectacular mountain scenery along the Tradouw Pass.
