West Coast & Cederberg Mountains
Why visit the West Coast & the Cederberg?
South Africa’s west coast and Cederberg areas may be less well-known than the Garden Route but they are just as appealing. Beautiful valleys criss-crossed with rivers are surrounded by the unique and stunning rock formations of the Cederberg while along the coast you’ll find charming fishing villages with white-washed houses and coastal parks with dramatic beaches and dunes.
In August & September springtime flowers burst into life with over 3,500 floral species, a magnificent display of nature at her finest. There is plenty to do year-round, with walking and cycling trails, unique flora and fynbos and some of the oldest artwork on the planet showcased in the numerous rock art paintings hidden in the hills.
This beautiful area can be reached in little over two hours’ drive from Cape Town.

Highlights of the West Coast & Cederberg Mountains
• The Cederberg Mountains are scenically unique and known for their striking rock formations. Hike, cycle or canoe through pristine wilderness and cool off in a refreshing rock pool.
• The Cederberg is home to some of the best preserved rock art dating back thousands of years. The art offers a cultural insight into the way of life of the San people.
• During spring (August to October) the Cederberg is transformed with a spectacular display of wildflowers, including many that are unique to the area, a colourful treat for the eyes.
• Paternoster is a quaint fishing village with white-washed houses, a beautiful beach and a number of excellent restaurants – just ask the Capetonians who head here for summer weekends! To guarantee a table, early booking is required.
• Take a hike or enjoy the beautiful beaches and dunes of the Columbine Nature Reserve, right next to Paternoster, or the West Coast National Park where you’ll find bird hides along the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon. The park is particularly beautiful during the spring flower season (August-September).
• South Africa’s world-famous Rooibos (redbush) tea is only grown naturally in the Cederberg. Around Clanwilliam there are rooibos farms and tea houses where you can learn about the process and sample the famous brew. The area also produces some fine Cederberg wines.
• The Cederberg’s remote location makes it one of the best places in South Africa for stargazing.
