Nyerere
Why safari in Nyerere National Park?
Nyerere, formerly known as Selous, ranks as one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Tanzania’s biggest river runs through the park, creating a series of lakes and breathtaking landscapes. From palm forests to hot springs and wide-open plains, the diverse eco-systems set the scene for some unique safari experiences.

Nyerere's Highlights
- The mighty Rufiji River flows through the park, its channels creating picturesque landscapes, oxbow lakes and sandbanks. The river is home to abundant hippos and crocodiles, and large herds of animals are drawn to its banks.
- Nyerere is one of the few parks in Tanzania where you can enjoy a boat safari. Cruising along the river gives a unique perspective on wildlife, such as elephants drinking at the river’s edge and crocodiles basking in the sun. Sunset cruises are particularly beautiful.
- The abundance of water means that the birdlife is rich and varied, with over 40 bird species recorded in the park.
- As well as hippos and crocodiles, the park is home to one of the largest populations of elephants in Tanzania, as well as vast numbers of lions, giraffes, buffalo and a significant population of African wild dogs, one of the most endangered predators on the continent.
- Being off the beaten track, Nyerere is less crowded than Tanzania’s northern parks, allowing for a more intimate safari experience. Experience a close connection to nature on a thrilling walking safari.

When to travel to Nyerere
The best time to visit Nyerere is in the dry season from June to October when wildlife is easier to see in the thinning vegetation and animals gather by the Rufiji River, its lakes and lagoons. From November to May, during the wet season wildlife viewing can be challenging and the heat and humidity are high. Many lodges are closed from April to May.
