The island is an intriguing blend of ancient and modern, the rich history, ornate Arabic architecture and Swahili culture evident in the streets of Stone Town and reflected in many of the island’s hotels and resorts.

Zanzibar’s Highlights
Stone Town is Zanzibar’s cultural heart. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow winding alleys, cultural landmarks and bustling bazaars. Must-see sights include the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the Sultan’s Palace and Freddy Mercury’s House. Stay either in the town itself in a boutique hotel or oceanfront resort or visit on a day trip from your island base.
The tide has a great impact on Zanzibar’s beaches – at high tide some are practically non-existent and at low tide the water can go out several hundred metres, so for that reason we recommend choosing a hotel with a good swimming pool.
The northwest coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, typically has the best beaches for all day sunbathing and swimming, while on the east coast the beaches at Paje and Jambiani are ideal for kite surfing.
Zanzibar’s cuisine is flavoured with the island’s spices - cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. Visit a spice farm or the colourful spice stalls in the Stone Town markets.
The Jozani Forest is home to the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found only on the island.
Snorkel or dive among colourful marine life in the surrounding atolls, try a spot of dolphin watching or take a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow. Most resorts offer a variety of water sports.
