Katavi
Why safari in Katavi National Park?
Katavi offers a rare glimpse of Africa as it once was – raw, untamed and teeming with wildlife. Far off the beaten track, the park’s remote location ensures that its vast and pristine wilderness remains authentic and unspoiled. From woodlands and floodplains to rivers and seasonal lakes, the dramatic scenery is as varied as the wildlife it contains. Adventure seekers will be rewarded with an immersive safari experience unlike any other.

Highlights of Katavi
- The Katuma River flows through the park, creating seasonal lakes such as Katavi and Chada. During the dry season from June to October, when the floodplains dry up, these vital sources of water attract wildlife in vast numbers, in particular elephants, buffalo, antelope and giraffe.
- In the dry season, the concentration of wildlife around the diminishing water sources makes for incredible predator interaction, with large lion prides, packs of hyenas and even leopard regularly seen. Game drives at this time can be particularly thrilling.
- The park is particularly known for its huge Cape Buffalo herds, whose numbers have been known to reach over 1,000 – an impressive sight.
- Katavi also has high numbers of hippos and crocodiles, often seen packed into muddy pools in the dry season months, and emerging en masse when the rains return, turning the floodplains into wetlands that teem with birdlife.
