Highlights of the Mahale Mountains
- Mahale Mountains National park is one of the best places to see chimpanzees in the wild. Expert guides will lead you through winding forested trails in search of a family of chimpanzees – observing these highly intelligent animals in their forest home is a rare and unforgettable experience. Be warned though, chimps like to be active so the trek can be challenging!
- The pristine rainforest is home to eight other primate species, including red colobus and vervet monkeys, as well as over 350 species of birds, butterflies and other forest-dwelling animals.
- At the foot of the mountains is Lake Tanganyika, a fresh-water lake with sandy beaches and clear water, ideal for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling.
- The park’s remote location means that it is largely unspoiled, a peaceful place to experience true, off-grid wilderness. Sunsets over the lake are simply magnificent.
- It is recommended to spend 2 or 3 days in Mahale to have the best chance of seeing the chimpanzees.

When to travel to Mahale
Chimpanzees can be tracked all year round in the Mahale Mountains. However the best chance of finding them is from August to October at the end of the dry season.
