Why holiday in Murchison Falls?

Uganda’s  largest conservation area is also home to one of the most impressive waterfalls in East Africa – Murchison Falls. The Victoria Nile River flows through the park and when it reaches the Fajao Gorge it plunges 45 metres through a narrow gap in the rift valley wall – a powerful and dramatic sight. It then continues calmly through the park to Lake Albert. This watery paradise is a bird watchers dream, with over 550 recorded bird species, including sightings of the rare shoebill stork, a large bird with pre-historic looks.

Boat cruises sail upstream to the foot of the Falls and are a fantastic way to experience the water-based wildlife, the riverbanks often teeming with hippos and crocodiles. From the viewpoint at the top of the Falls, reached either by a hike from the boat or by road, you’ll have an incredible view of the river as it forces its way through the narrow gorge.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife too with game drives on the open savannahs providing opportunities to spot elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes and antelopes, including the Ugandan kob. A visit to Murchison Falls is an exciting addition to any Ugandan trip.

When to travel to Murchison Falls

Game viewing in Murchison Falls National Park is quite consistent year round. The driest months thin the vegetation making it easier to spot animals, whilst the rains bring bright green scenery and beauty to Uganda's largest national park.
