Zambia
Why safari in Zambia?
Zambia, for us, evokes untouched wildernesses, combined with a warm and friendly nation, proud to share with you their magnificent country. A safari by foot through the South Luangwa and its rich river valley will always excite. For a more remote experience, Kafue has plains teeming with game, whilst even further afield there is the raw and untouched wilderness of Liuwa Plain.
The Lower Zambezi National Park sits on the mighty Zambezi River which creates an awesome back drop for land or water safaris. Add in the majesty of Victoria Falls, and you will see why Zambia has a special place in our hearts.
Discover Zambia
Explore Zambia
With a world-famous waterfall, pristine parks and exceptional wildlife, Zambia is a beautiful, friendly country, full of surprises.
The magnificent Victoria Falls feature on most holidays to Zambia and when they are at their peak, the sheer volume of water is breathtaking. The town of Livingstone, with its multitude of adventure activities, sits at the head of the Falls and along the riverbanks, accommodation ranges from lively resorts to gorgeous, intimate lodges.
The South Luangwa National Park boasts a diverse range of animals and birds and has a particularly good reputation for leopard sightings. It is also widely regarded as the home of the walking safari, a wonderfully authentic way to explore the bush.
A safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park combines game drives and activities on the river, which we feel is a perfect complement to a stay in the South Luangwa.
For an added sense of adventure, we suggest a few days in the remote and unspoiled wilderness of Kafue, Zambia’s largest park. The open plains, lakes and wetlands attract an incredible variety of wildlife and are largely unexplored.
Liuwa Plain may be harder to reach but as a result it has remained beautifully untouched. And on its vast plains, Africa’s second largest wildebeest migration unfolds – ask our team for the best time to enjoy this unique ‘Serengeti meets Delta’ experience.
Experience Zambia
Safari. Zambia’s parks are many and varied and the safari experiences are equally as diverse. In the South Luangwa, walking in the bush on tracks carved by elephants feels very close to nature. In the Lower Zambezi, viewing wildlife from the river gives a different perspective. Smaller parks, such as the North Luangwa and Luambe, are remote, wild and untouched.
Safari experiences. When it comes to unique safaris, Zambia has plenty to propose. Take the wildebeest migration in Liuwa Plain or the arrival of 10 million fruit bats in Kasanka National Park, two extraordinary phenomena. The birdlife is spectacular too, whether we’re talking sightings of the Shoebill stork with its pre-historic looks or hundreds of colourful Carmine bee-eaters as they return to roost. Our team will be happy to advise on where and when to witness these remarkable events.
Natural wonders. The Victoria Falls are one of the Natural Wonders of the World, fueled by the mighty Zambezi River. In Kafue the waters of the Kafue River and Lake Itezhi-Tezhi attract a host of birds and antelope such as puku and lechwe while the vast plains are prime cheetah territory.
Action & adventure. Livingstone is Zambia’s adrenalin capital. Fly over the Falls on a microlight flight or heli flip or walk to viewpoints such as Knife’s Edge Bridge and the Boiling Point. Explore the Zambezi River in a number of ways – white water rafting, canoeing or a leisurely sunset cruise. On dry land, nothing quite beats a walking safari and the thrill of sleeping under the stars or in a glamorous bush camp.
Cultural experiences: Zambia’s cultural heritage is on display in the Livingstone Museum. Dine in style on board an elegant steam train or head upstream to a riverside café where you can enjoy lunch or dinner and meet a herd of rescued elephants.
Travel Zambia Your Way
The main reserves in Zambia are remotely spread across the country and consequently travelling between them needs careful planning to ensure your time on safari is maximised. We’re here at African Pride to help plan and advise how to do this in a way that meets your wishes as effortlessly as possible.
Guided Tours
In such a remote part of Africa, it is no surprise that guided tours operate differently, to showcase nature’s finest spectacles: bat migration safaris, tours in search of the elusive Shoebill or a walking safari through the game rich South Luangwa Valley. Alternatively, several superior quality soft adventure ‘overland tours’, travel through Zambia as they journey between East and Southern Africa.
Private Guided Trip
If you prefer to travel independently, then a private guided trip is the perfect way to go. Your own guide can be arranged to travel with you, camp to camp, sharing the entire journey through Zambia to enhance the holiday as you go. Ideal for a couple but also a family or group of friends, creating a truly memorable experience.
Flying in Zambia
Zambia is well served by many of the world’s leading carriers with flights into Lusaka or Livingstone Airports. For onward connections we have access to competitive fares to link to the main safari areas, and a comprehensive network of scheduled flight transfers. The African Pride team can advise on the best routes and fares to ensure an effortless journey.
Rail
Travelling by train through the ever-changing African countryside is a wonderful way to see the country especially through such remote areas of Africa. Rovos Rail travels through Zambia on its epic train journey through five countries from Cape Town and Dar-es-Salaam. For something more local enjoy dinner on a steam train as you travel over the Victoria Falls Railway bridge.
Multi-Country Combinations
If the holiday of a lifetime would be to combine the mighty Victoria Falls, with a city stay in Cape Town, gorilla trekking in Rwanda, or seeing the Great Migration crossing the Serengeti before ending on an idyllic beach in the Seychelles, then no problem, the African Pride team relish and excel at making such dreams come true.
Zambia’s Accommodation
The choice is yours! Choose from a five-star resort overlooking Victoria Falls, or exquisite lodges found on the banks of some of Africa’s iconic rivers. On safari, options range from beautiful lodges to simple, authentic bush camps. Discuss with us the accommodation styles preferred and we can suggest properties to suit from the wide selection of hotels, camps and lodges we know, first hand.
When to travel to Zambia
For most National Park's in Zambia, the main season is from May to October, with the dry winter months bringing the best game viewing from July to September. October begins to get very hot before the rains arrive in November time, although November is when the Bat Safari takes place at Kasanka.
Many camps close from November to May, but those which are still accessible reward birders, photographers and bring plenty of new born animals. Liuwa Plain is the place to be once the rains arrive however, as the life giving water attracts the herds of the wildebeest migration.
