Why safari in Kafue National Park?

Zambia’s oldest and largest National Park, Kafue is vast, unspoiled and largely unexplored – a true hidden gem where you can enjoy an uncrowded safari experience and feel deeply immersed in nature.

Kafue isn’t about huge numbers of animals, it’s more about the diversity, with a range of animals that are rarely all seen in one park. The open plains, lakes and wetlands attract an incredible variety of wildlife – as well as elephants, buffalo, big cats, cheetahs and hyena, there are wild dogs, crocodiles, hippos and rare antelope species such as sable, red lechwe and roan that are uncommon in Zambia’s other parks. The pristine environment, sense of space and remoteness are huge attractions too.

In the northern sector, the Busanga Plains are accessible only during the dry season. From July to October, the open plains attract grazers like lechwe, puku, buffalo, and wildebeest, with predators such as lions and cheetahs following close behind.

Camps located around the centre of the park are open year-round and offer more than traditional game drives – visitors can also explore the area on foot or by boat along the Kafue River.

" Zambia amazed me. It felt like I had this beautiful wilderness all to myself. I loved the back-to-nature feel of the bush camps and the pampering in the luxurious waterside lodges. Fantastic leopard sightings, sundowners with pink fizz and the people so warm and welcoming everywhere. "

"The holiday was absolutely fantastic. Saw all the big 5 except rhinos. The accommodation was top class (lovely big beds), the people who staffed it were so friendly, guides were so knowledgeable, you really felt they wanted you to visit their country. We did a helicopter tour over Victoria falls, which were awe inspiring - another highlight of the holiday. All the transfers were smooth and efficient and this reduced any stress in the holiday, loved the small plane hops between camps in Botswana. We had an unforgettable holiday and will be boring our friends and family with it for months. Thanks for your help in organising this wonderful holiday. "

"South Africa was absolutely fabulous. Too many highlights to mention. The “stand out” for us was definitely the Rovos Train. The helicopter flight over Victoria Falls was exciting & the Safari at Shamwari was superb! Driving the Garden route (& sometimes off the beaten track !) was stunning. Great memories of such a lovely country."

When to travel to Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is at her finest from July to October, when all camps are open and game viewing is at its best. The Busanga Plains and some remote camps are inaccessible during the green season, however those which remain open offer excellent birding and superb scenery.
