South Luangwa National Park
Why holiday in South Luangwa National Park?
Zambia’s premier wildlife destination, the South Luangwa is a compelling mix of wildlife and stunning landscapes. The Luangwa River and its seasonal oxbow lakes are the lifeblood of the park, attracting a wide range of animals, including hippos, crocodiles and predators. Leopard numbers are particularly high here – in fact the South Luangwa is regarded as one of the best places in Africa for leopard sightings.
In addition to game drives in open vehicles, the park is renowned for its walking safaris, a chance to feel at one with nature and get closer to the action. Night drives are offered too, as the sun sets, the nocturnal species emerge and the predators begin to hunt.
The park has two distinct seasons – between May and October, it’s the dry season, animals are dawn to the river and are easier to spot. When the rains arrive, between November and April, the park is transformed into a lush, green, watery wilderness, a paradise for birds and bird watchers alike. Some camps remain open during this time, offering boat safaris through the flooded ebony groves and lagoons.
For a true sense of the South Luangwa we suggest combining a few nights in a lodge by the river with a walking safari, heading deeper into the park and staying in one of the beautifully authentic bush camps.

When to travel to South Luangwa National Park
South Luangwa's peak game viewing is in the dry season months of May to October, when game drives may be combined with exciting walking safaris. October can be too hot for walking for some guests. From November to April some remote camps close down, although those which remain open offer superb birdwatching and boating in the park.
