Why safari in Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve?

Set in Zimbabwe’s remote southeastern corner, just across the border from South Africa, the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve occupies 115,000 acres of pristine wilderness. The reserve’s diverse habitats attract a huge variety of birds and wildlife including rare and endangered species such as the roan and sable antelope, wild dogs and cheetah. The reserve is also home to the Big 5 of the safari world (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino), and is particularly well known for its healthy black and white rhino populations.

Game drives will take you through forests of mopane trees and ‘upside-down’ baobab trees. Try your hand at fishing on Malilangwe Dam or relax on a scenic sundowner cruise. Cultural tours to ancient San rock art sites, dating back over 2,000 years, provide insights into the lifestyle of the region's original hunter-gatherers, while community visits offer an introduction to the rich traditions and culture of the local Shangaan people. With just one lodge in the reserve, the experiences are all the more exclusive.

The reserve is a non-profit trust taking great care to create a balance between conservation and the development of the local community, who benefit from employment, improved healthcare and education.

With flights from Johannesburg and the Kruger, Malilangwe can combine well with a holiday in South Africa – ask our team for their advice and recommendations.

Unmissable Victoria Falls always has a warm welcome, but then I'm biased as it's my home town! You'll be immersed in the wildlife experience with elephant and buffalo roaming through the town regularly. For the adrenalin seekers there's white water rafting on the mighty Zambezi. You'll enjoy outstanding safari experiences at Mana Pools and Hwange, two of my favourite places in this beautiful country.

"The holiday was absolutely fantastic. Saw all the big 5 except rhinos. The accommodation was top class (lovely big beds), the people who staffed it were so friendly, guides were so knowledgeable, you really felt they wanted you to visit their country. We did a helicopter tour over Victoria falls, which were awe inspiring - another highlight of the holiday. All the transfers were smooth and efficient and this reduced any stress in the holiday, loved the small plane hops between camps in Botswana. We had an unforgettable holiday and will be boring our friends and family with it for months. Thanks for your help in organising this wonderful holiday. "

When to travel to Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve

For the safari experience, the best time to visit is in winter, from May to October. It’s warm during the day but it is also dry, this means the vegetation is less dense and the animals are drawn to the water. During the green season from November to April the park is lusher.
