Alternative Migrations
The Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania isn’t the only migration of note in Africa. If you’re in these areas at the right time, you may be lucky enough to witness some truly special migrations.
In Botswana, zebras and wildebeest move in large numbers between Chobe and the Makgadikgadi Pans, the longest land mammal migration on the continent. The best time to spot them is between the months of December and March when the herds flood the plains around the Magkadikgadi Pans.
In Zambia, up to 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats converge on Kasanka National Park to feat on the fruits of a local tree. You can witness this extraordinary phenomenon from a hide set 60- feet up on a tree tope – watching the bats disperse a dusk descends is simply spectacular.
Colourful Carmine bee-eater birds flock to Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park to roost each year, gathering in their hundreds to choose a breeding site on the steep, sandy banks of the Luangwa River. The best months to see them roosting are usually September and October.
As with all wildlife, encounters can never be guaranteed. However, share your specific preferences with us, and our experienced team will work to maximise your chances.
