Family Holidays in Africa
Africa is a great adventure for children with its fascinating wildlife, awe-inspiring natural wonders and colourful people. Keeping the whole pride happy, including children, parents and grandparents is the key.
What age is best to take children on safari?
Many lodges will only accept children from 8 years, or sometimes 12 years plus. For lodges that accept younger children but don’t permit them to go on game drives, activities such as making pizzas with the chef may be as much fun as watching giraffes!
Exclusive Family Spaces
Exclusive-use houses and villas are a great option for families, especially multi-generational ones. We know some special places in the finest locations – contact us to find out more.
“To truly reconnect, you need to go where the WiFi is weakest”
The right guide can bring all ages – from tots to teens – out of their shell. Many lodges do have WiFi, but there will be so much to see and do on safari, that teenagers don’t have a chance to miss their gadgets.
Health & Safety for Families
The choice of safari area will depend on whether anti-malarials are recommended and if the family is happy to take them. Child seats or booster seats do not always come as standard in Africa. We can make the required arrangements with our ground suppliers.
School Holiday Peaks
We know that accommodation can be hard to find over school holidays. We are experts at thinking beyond the obvious and personalising itineraries to make them work for you.
Unique Family Memories to last a lifetime
Watch an elephant herd splashing and playing in a waterhole. Unleash their warrior instincts as your children learn the skills of a Masaai Warrior. Sleep out on a skybed under the stars and channel your inner ‘Lion King’!
Some family holiday suggestions
Masai Mara – The Masai Mara is a great choice for a family safari for many reasons - the abundance of game, the chance to see the Great Migration, learn Maasai warrior skills and for Kenyans’ love of children! And what better way to learn about other cultures, wildlife and conservation than by being immersed in it.
Shamwari Private Reserve – In a malaria free game reserve in South Africa, Shamwari have really thought of everything for families: Childminding services for when you are on a game drive, a Kids on Safari Adventure Centre with an outdoor area to burn off energy and indoor area for creative fun. Accommodation has been thoughtfully designed to give space and privacy for families with inter-leading rooms and with menus deliciously crafted to appeal to children – everyone will be happy!
