Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles nest on the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal’s Elephant Coast in  South Africa and across the border on the southern beaches of Mozambique. Female turtles typically return to the same spot each year, to nest and lay their eggs between November and February, carefully choosing their spot and excavating a pit in the sand. Little hatchlings will emerge between 55-70 days later and make their way to the ocean.

In Madagascar, don a mask and flippers to snorkel with the Green and Hawksbill turtles that frequent the clear waters around Nosy Komba. The nesting season here usually runs from October to February, with hatchlings appearing 45-60 days after the eggs are laid.

Green and Hawksbill turtles also nest on the pristine beaches of the Seychelles – both are attracted to the sandy beaches on Denis Private Island and North Island while Curieuse and Cousin Islands are major nesting sites for the Hawksbill turtles. Turtles also nest, though to a lesser degree, on beaches on the main islands of Mahé,  Praslin and La Digue. The Hawksbills nest between October and January while Green turtles can nest year round, with a peak from June to September.
