DAY 1
Start your holiday with an overnight flight to Antananarivo via Addis Ababa.
DAY 2
On arrival into Madagascar’s capital city you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay. This afternoon, explore the historic old city and Upper Town with its narrow cobbled streets and traditional Malagasy houses built entirely of wood.
DAYS 3-4
Fly to Morondava, your base for the next two nights as you explore this fascinating region with your guide. Cruise through the mangroves on a pirogue, a traditional sailboat, to a coastal village where you’ll see the Vezo, semi-nomadic fishermen, return with their daily catch. Drive along the Alley of the Baobabs and visit the Kirindy Reserve. Some of Madagascar’s most extraordinary creatures including Madame Berthe’s lemur, the world’s smallest primate, and the nocturnal fossa, Madagascar’s largest carnivore, inhabit the forest.
DAY 5
Head inland to the highlands, passing through rice fields, mountains and traditional villages. Spend a night in Antsirabe, a town known for its thermal waters and where the main mode of transport is the ‘pousse-pousse’ - a hand-pulled rickshaw.
DAY 6
Continue south through the highlands to Ambositra, a centre for Malagasy handicrafts, in particular the intricate woodcarvings of the Zafimaniry Art. See some of the artisans at work before driving on to Fianarantsoa for a one night stay at Tsara Guest House. With its rich architecture and 19th century buildings, the city is a cultural centre that is also home to one of the island’s oldest cathedrals.
DAYS 7-8
The landscape changes to dry bush and semi-desert as you head to Isalo for a two night stay. Stop en route in Ambalavao, a town known for its Antemoro paper mills then enjoy a day walking and hiking in Isalo National Park. This beautiful landscape is home to canyons and waterfalls, but the highlight for many is spotting the ring-tailed lemur amongst the various species which live here.
DAY 9
Drive to the coast for an overnight stay near Toliara. The small fishing villages along the coast here near Mangily & Ifaty overlook the Mozambique Channel and offer spectacular sunset views at the end of the day. En route you will visit an open pit sapphire mine before continuing on via Zombitse-Vohibasia Park, home to lemur species and a host of endemic birds.
DAYS 10-12
Cross the mouth of the Onilahy River by boat to Anakao for a three night stay at your resort set just off the beach. If you’re travelling between June and September, you might see migrating whales. Spend a full day exploring Tsimanampetsotsa Park with its huge lake, resident reptiles and superb birdlife. The following morning sail to the little island of Nosy Ve, with its amazing beach and superb snorkelling – a real Robinson Crusoe feeling.
DAY 13
This morning you will return by boat to Toliara then fly back to Antananarivo for a final night back at the Palissandre Hotel & Spa in the capital.
DAY 14
Enjoy a final breakfast in Madagascar before you are transferred to the Fly back to the UK overnight via Addis Ababa.
